The first measure to be taken at the sign of a sore throat is to paint the throat two or three times a day with concentrated whey (Molkosan), since this may actually arrest a case of incipient tonsillitis. Whey will destroy the germs on the surface of the tonsils and to some extent even in the crypts and channels of the throat. It will prevent the formation of toxins and help the body’s own defences to advance to the infected area. In fact, this condensed, natural lactic acid product made from whey has proved far superior to the strongest chemical disinfectants and is free from the harmful properties the latter may possess.
If this remedy is not handy, the pimpernel root (Pimpinella saxifraga) or imperial masterwort (Imperatoria ostruthium) fulfils the same purpose if you keep chewing it.
Thorough oral hygiene is essential. Frequent gargling with salt
water is good, or just suck a slice of lemon, unsweetened, every day, for lemon juice is equally effective. Make sure that the lemon skin has not been sprayed with pesticide. In chronic cases the use of special equipment may be necessary to clean the tonsils regularly and paint them afterwards with whey concentrate. Dr Roeder’s Apparatus, for example, is designed to suck the pus off the tonsils.

Years ago, when we were not so eager to work overtime by artificial light and went to bed early, there were fewer people with painful, weak and tired eyes. So why not try a most extraordinary remedy? Why not turn the clock back and live for four weeks without electric light? How can you do this? Well, quite simply by doing without the convenience of modern lighting. You refrain from using this miracle of modern technology; you simply do not switch on the electric light. Your painful, burning, overtired eyes, which can no longer do their work efficiently, will respond to this care and rapidly recover.” But in j order to be well armed against the force of habit, you must plan j your day carefully so that when it gets dark, you will not bej tempted to turn on the light despite all your good intentions.
Years ago, the evenings were used to relax and recuperate and to prepare oneself for the rest that was to end the day. Try to do this for four weeks. It will help you to see and experience why ourl Creator has given us the different lights, the bright light of the sun by day and the gentle soothing moonlight by night. Just try to work hard in the soft moonlight. You will gladly desist. Why?! Because if you let its magic spell work on you like an age-old! lullaby, you will soon drop off and enjoy a deep, restful sleep.] Truly, if you make full use of the night for rest, you will wake cheerfully with the first gleam of daylight, without feeling drowse or still tired and sluggish. You will not feel morose and only partially rested, turning over on the other side to sleep on into the day. What you had intended doing by artificial light, you can do more cheerfully and with much less effort in the full light of the early morning. You will be amazed at what this compliance to nature’s laws can do for you; it will renew your energies and benefit your eyesight at the same time.

Although the epidemics that have hit Europe again and again for some decades no longer kill as many victims as at first, we must nevertheless regard influenza as a serious disease, especially when we consider its possible after effects. For example, it can cause pneumonia, or an acute deterioration of a chronic liver condition; it may also affect the kidneys, pancreas and abdominal organs. It is also possible for the myocardium to suffer and eczema to break out. Rheumatism can result from an improperly or incompletely treated bout of flu. All these after effects can possibly be prevented if treatment is given until the cure is complete.

If a baby is indirectly fed such drugs we must not be surprised to see its health adversely affected. So, if your baby has cradle cap, think about the drugs you might be taking. If you have the unpleasant habit of smoking, you should certainly give it up while you are breast-feeding. Think of your child. Would you want your baby’s health upset because your irresponsibility means it has to try and cope with poisonous nicotine?
Even during pregnancy nicotine has an adverse effect on the unborn child. You can prove this to yourself by means of a simple experiment. Place a stethoscope on the mother’s abdomen and count the child’s heartbeats. Then let the mother smoke just one cigarette and then count the beats again. You will note that they have increased by eight per minute! Once the mother and her partner have convinced themselves of this overstimulation, they will be in no doubt that the mother should give up smoking at once.
Certain foods can affect the mother’s milk in the same way as drugs. I have often seen a child’s cradle cap disappear within a few days if the mother avoids eating egg white. It is, therefore, especially important to adopt a healthy diet while breast-feeding, as set out in another section of this book. Nursing mothers should remember that they are eating for both themselves and the baby.
Try to breast-feed your baby for as long as possible. But if, in spite of changing your own diet, the child’s condition remains unaltered, then replace a meal by giving a bottle of almond milk or buttermilk. Babies suffering from cradle cap respond well to this less fatty food. Violaforce, the fresh plant extract made from wild pansy, can be added to buttermilk to enhance its curative effect.

It should be sufficiently well known today that alcohol in the body at the moment of conception may already have frightful consequences. It is therefore utterly irresponsible to beget and bear children while indulging in alcohol. Unfortunately, this often happens after parties where heavy drinking has taken place, even though such thoughtlessness may lead to a tragedy. Every mother-to-be should understand the risk and dangers of alcohol and make it her duty to abstain from it throughout her pregnancy.
It is equally irresponsible of women to smoke during pregnancy and while nursing. Research has shown that only a few hours after smoking, nicotine is already present in the mother’s milk. Who, then, can guarantee that during pregnancy the poison will not reach the placenta – and the unborn baby – just as quickly?
If at all possible, X-rays, radium therapy and any other type of radiation used in modern therapies should be avoided. Unfortunately, it is impossible to escape the radiation that contaminates the air as a result of nuclear explosion drifts, since it is not in our power to do anything about it.
